The solitaire's bride review:
From Table set up during food tasting

I can only use feedback i've from the guests as i didn't get to eat much of the food on actual day myself and of course what i've eaten during food tasting.

The most unforgettable dish is the steam cod fillet with minced garlic. Somehow all the guests really loved this dish.

The deep fried spare ribs with yellow cream sauce is not a very popular dish as well as signature herbal empress chicken. Though the deep fried spare ribs is the love of my SO (hmmm strange). The soup of the signature herbal empress chicken is nice too but the meat like all dishes that are cooked in soup is a tad dry.

The braised ee-fu noodles is quite a unique tasty dish. The only dish that didn't really deliver both times during food tasting and actual day will be the sharks' fin soup. The ingredients are really not lacking but the soup still too bland on both counts.

From Hilton's Signature Cheesecake
I did tried the Hilton's signature's cheese cake during food tasting. I wouldn't give it raving review especially with someone with a sweet tooth. Its ok i suppose, just that it doesn't delight or surprise.

My colleagues love the vegetarian menu and find the presentation of the dishes very nice.

Overall i will give a thumbs up for the food, presentation and serving portions. The portions served by Hilton is really huge. At the very least, you are ensured with a full hearty meal.

Hair combing - The four blessings

一梳梳到尾 Yi Shu Shu Dao Wei,
First combing, continuous from beginning till end, may you be together all your lives.

二梳百年好合 Er Shu Bai Nian Hao He,
Second combing, may you have closeness and harmony in your marriage.

三梳子孙满堂 San Shu Zi Sun Man Tang,
Third combing, may the laughter of children fill the halls of your home with children.

四梳白发齐眉 Si Shu Bai Fa Qi Mei。
Fourth combing, may you enjoy an everlasting love till a ripe old age.

The solitairebride's take

A simple and lovely ritual to perform and practise differs for this simple ceremony.

To me its a meaningful ritual. I somehow instill the idea to my mum that this is a need as she originally thinks its not necessary.

I'm more well versed in wedding ceremonies than her now.

Setting the bridal bed (An Chuang)

The an chuang ceremony is done to symbolise good health and bring fortune to the couple and to bless them with lots of children.

When:
It is usually done a few days to 1 week before the customary wedding. An auspicious date and time needs to be chosen for An Chuang. The bed is usually not disturbed till the wedding day itself.

A good fortune woman, one whose husband and children are alive and has many grandchildren will install the bridal bed and make the bed with a new set of bedsheet (red or pink) . After which, the woman or couple will leave on the bed a plate with the following items:

1. 2 oranges
2. Peanuts
3. Dried red dates
4. Dried lotus seeds
5. Dried longans
6. Sweets
7. Dried persimmons
8. A twig of promegranate leave
9. 2 red packets

After setting the bridal bed, the pair of bedside lamps from Dowry will be lit. These lamps are not turned off until the wedding night. If the An Chuang date is too far off from the actual day, the plate of items to be placed on the bed as well as the lamps may be lit on the actual day itself.

On the same day or on the wedding day, little children (preferably male) are invited to roll and jump on the bed to bless the couple with lots of children.

If installing a new bed is not practical, it is suggested that the bed has to be moved from its original position.

Taboos:
Avoid joining two single beds together.

The solitairebride take:
Items placed on bed includes
4 individual red packets filled with dried longans, dried red dates, lotus seeds and lily bulbs respectively
2 oranges
1 S$12 red packet

1 brand new bedsheet
Pair of bedside lamps

Me and my hubby did the bed installation together. :) The modern day's way!!! Its not that difficult and quite fun to boot.

My mum insisted that all the items put in the red packets to be done only by the male though. Beats me why this has to be so. Have fun ladies and gentlemen!

Chronology - Digio Bridal Boutique

[The chronology of events is simply acts as a reference to give brides a rough idea of the flow of events. Remember to always communicate with your bridal coordinator. No one will know what you desire until you voice them out.]

For me, i always like to sit on matters until i'm certain that this is what i really want prior to liase with my coordinator. Apparently i didn't give him any heart attacks with my change of mind (i did not do it very frequently though).

The entire process from the gowns making to actual day is almost a year long so its important to work with someone you think you can communicate with. Else it is more a dread than joy for the photoshoot and actual day.

11 Nov 2008 - Recce bridal boutiques and sign on the spot with Digio

Mini album

I made this cute mini album using our photoshoot photos a while back as i was so into my holy matrimony then. All high and jazzed up.

Its so mini and definitely easy to lug around since its the size of a thumb. The quality of the finishing is good. And what i love about it, is the express service. I got it under 1.5 hrs with no surcharges. Whatever is free is good. And now when i want to reminisce about my wedding, i can whip it out from my handbag and browse. How convenient.

The Movie - Childhood montage

This is one of my "biggest" project for my wedding. The montages. I made 3 in all.

I pretty satisfied with the final outcome. In case, you are wondering. The montages were made using Imovie in Macbook. This little software makes things a lot more easier. All i need to do is choose the songs, input my photos and have a transition effects. And Yay its all done. (Well almost) There always a need of minor tweaking.

Though i prefer it to be more fanciful with more effects but well it beyond the capabilities of the software.

Here's my childhood montage which was played before march in.

The second was played during dinner with the background music.

And now where's the third? Let's keep it in suspense for a little while longer.

Sick yet again

I think recently i've fallen sick on a regular basis. And all in a short span of 2 weeks apart from each other. I wonder if its because i tried to impede the process by taking loads of vitamins

Prior the wedding. I had the unfortunate encounter by having an eye stye. I never had one for my entire life. And just before the wedding it had to strike me. I was frantic. But i suppose it serves me right as i have used the contaminated eye lash product that i left unused for 1 month. All for the sake of looking my best on my day and it had the opposite effect. Fortunately i had 1.5 weeks before the actual day. And my doctor assured me that i will be well before. Alas few days down the road, i was down with flu. But it went away fast enough. Then before the honeymoon i was sniffing and coughing in office yet again. But it dissappeared miraculously enough.

And now days after i return from honeymoon, i was struck with sore throat, inflammation and high fever on Friday. Taking the panadol and anti-inflammatory tablets helped to bring down the fever but i was knocked out for the whole of Saturday. Now before the public holiday tomorrow, the sore throat is still there and i got cough and blocked nose.

I feel pretty wretched and frustrated at the moment....there is no place like my own home.

The Perfect Ten movie soundtrack

I had the most difficult time to get my first march in song. To be fair in the literal sense, me and my SO decide to choose a song each.

I chose: Aslyn - That's when i love you.

For the longest time, i thought i settled my choice of song until i realise how difficult and expensive it is to get the songs i wanted. Aslyn, i realise too late, is a small time artist in USA. Her album is NOT available in Singapore. And for copyright purposes, the songs must be original. OMG. Its 1 month to my wedding then.

I tried to make do with other songs. But i found that that "That's when i love you" is the most meaningful and ultimate love song.

Thanks to my great sis i finally got the album from another movie soundtrack from Japan - How to deal. Relieved.

Here's my first march in song that i really loved.

For the second march in, it came from my hotel's song list. Bryan Adams and Barbra Streisand - I Finally Found Someone.

The Background Music:
Joanna Wong's Let's start from here.
I loved this album for its compilation of very nice love songs. Its moving and the singer's voice is soulful. It created the perfect ambience for my wedding.

Disc 1 (English)
Let's Start From Here
Lost In Paradise
As Love Begins to Mend
Bada Bada
Lost Taipei
The Best Mistake I've Ever Made
I Love You
For No Reason

New York State of Mind

Here's some of my favourite songs from her.

The perfect wedding and more than what a bride can wish for (REALLY!)

Its been 8 days after my wedding. Everything still seemed so surreal.

The wedding ran smoothly and perfectly. And i felt like a superstar with at least 5 cameras shooting me at any one time excluding the videographer. :)

Nearly had a heart attack when the make up artist was late. Agreed time was 6.50 am and earlier. As my mum insisted that i must be out of the house before 9 am. The PGs and VG had all arrived and still no sight of the MUA. *Hopping mad*. Fortunately, the gate crashing is short and sweet. (Send my love to my dear bridemaids) The bestmen never knew the doors ain't locked since the beginning. Funny how gentlemanly they all were.

The other minor set backs on the actual day was the bride suffering from lack of sleep. So my efforts of sleeping early for the week went down the drain. And i still ended up with puffy eyes. This cannot be helped as i seriously couldn't sleep the night before the wedding. Sigh!

And of course my clasp behind my gown had to give way just before my ROM. Sending everyone in a frenzy. All is resolved before dinner. And i have my desired classic wedding. The way i want it and within reasonable means.

Love my little creations which suits the mood of the classic wedding. I tend to do cutesy stuff and i tried really hard to make the wedding more classic then cute. So i won't look back in horror 20 years down the road and say OMG i didn't do this.

To sum it up i felt really happy that my months of efforts paid off.

Who says a wedding coordinator is needed?
Especially when you have such great friends and relatives who ran the show for you on the actual day. Of course, you must also have an impeccable sense of taste. BEAMS

Considering that I'm a bean counter by profession and if i can do it so can you. My job requires me to work overtime and i'm have not not done anything artistic except occassional scrapbooking. My artistic talents is generally limited to my secondary school art classes. No matter what, as a bride to be you must like and enjoy the process.

Take pride in your creation. Its probably much better than you think it is.

There are many DIY brides that share their templates and artworks which you can use too. And i've personally benefited from it.

Will share more of the wedding details and the individual really fantastic vendors from my wedding as soon as i can. Right now let me just basked in awe of my perfect wedding.

Wedding car - Its was BMW and now a Jaguar!

I have always wanted to have a convertible for a wedding car.
More specifically a volkswagon cabriolet in baby blue or white. However, it has gained popularity since the time I started planning for a wedding. Now this little car is getting as hot as my wedding date. I have to forgo it.

In search for another car (its a personal preference not to get a Mercedes E200), I emailed several car rental company. Some does purely wedding car. For some, they do rental on a regular basis coupled with 2nd hand car sales.

Some of their replies in "fine print" makes me quite horrified. The terms specified includes:

- Limited trips and timing restriction
"Limited from 7am to 5pm usage,up to a max. of 5trips. Any
extension before or thereafter chargeable at $30 per hour per car and
subjected to availability at point of request."

- no assurance on delivery of service
"reserves the right to cancel the booking with a minimum of 1 months notice, in which case deposit will be refunded in full."

All these terms make me more careful in my wedding car selection. In the end, i settled for a Jaguar BMW 5 series with New Century Limousine Services.

The contact person , Serena, is nice and accomodating while allowing us to meet them face to face. Apparently, they usually take internet banking transfers with no meet up.

The downside is they do not have a shop front but the pricing for car rental is super competitive. Having many years of experience in the industry is also a huge plus. Its a joyride on 10 October 2010.

Solitaire's feedback:
Excellent service and prompt response. Serena is very responsible and reliable.

One week before the wedding, she called to inform us that our wedding car is involved in an accident and need an overhaul and it won't be on time for our wedding day. She offered us a replacement car in 2 colours , champagne and grey. We are still considering when she offered us an upgrade with the maroon Jaguar which suits better with my morning theme.

On the day, the driver, is on time and provide excellent service especially for some shots when 2 cars run almost parallel. I will definitely recommend them to my friends.

The monogram (OURS)

I've done alot of samplers. But in the end. This is what i've eventually used on the card.

I know how this is going to sound. But it essentially is the initial to our surnames. And it should be read as M.S.

I love how the two letters entwine. This is when two becomes one.

Guo Da Li - 16 September 2010

My Guo Da Li (GDL) is finally over after all the preparation. I started since May and did not purchase any GDL during the lunar 7th month.

I'm proud to say. I purchased most of the stuff all by myself. SO helped by carrying the stuff and accompanying me.

My mum ordered the cakes, traditional cakes and biscuits.

It was a very long day. My SO woke up at 6 am in the morning. And my mum picked him up with all 40 plus boxes of cakes and delivered it to my place. So i get to sleep in till 7.30 am. We started delivering the cakes to relatives and my mum's friends soon after. The day ended at 11pm.

My cakes are the traditional type.

For the Bride
- 12 oranges
- 12 cans of pig trotters
- 2 bottles of Hennesy VSOP
- 4 point gold
- Dowry "Pin Jin"
- 4 ang pows (representing 2 pairs of dragon and phoenix candles)
- 38 boxes of Cakes
- 8 Traditional pea-cake
- 1 Candied peanut stripes (big)
- 1 Seasame peanut stripes (big)
- 2 Candied peanut stripes
- 2 Seasame peanut stripes
- Everlasting red cloth with yellow jade

For the Groom
- Return 8 oranges
- 2 bottles of orange juice
- 2 boxes of cakes
- 2 Candied peanut stripes
- 2 Seasame peanut stripes
- 1 Candied peanut stripes (big)
- 1 Seasame peanut stripes (big)
- 2 ang pows (representing phoenix candles)
- Dowry "Pin Jin"

Guo Da Li phototaking with my mum, aunt, hubby to be and me.

Lessons learnt.
- Plan the route and obtain specific address on behalf of your parents.

- Do the invitations early. Remind your parents. I did mine one week before but my mum did not get the full list of names. The invitations required for Guo Da Li was done 3 days before. I stayed up till 1 am every day to complete the task.

- Restrict the door to door visits to relatives only.
Unless your parents demands it. Its very tiring and rushed to complete it in one day. And we reached some relative's place like 10 plus pm.

Hope the above helps!

Ambigram

An ambigram is a typographical design or artform that may be read as one or more words not only in its form as presented, but also from another viewpoint, direction, or orientation.

My inspration came from chance. I was waiting for time to pass after going to my bridal shop. There are alot of interesting nic nac shops around tanjong pagar if you have the time to explore. To cut the long story short. I saw an ambigram which is a door hanger. Depending on how you hang it. It will spell as Go away or Come in.

So i decided to try my hand on it. And i'm so amazed with the results. This is completed in 30 minutes on a bus ride home. :D

I hope you can read this? ah....don't tell me even if you can't.

Too bad i can't find someone who can engrave it on my ring. (cheaply that is). But i made it into a sticker so i can stick it to anything i want! how cool is that.

Classical furniture pieces - i like i like!!

Are you like me? its my dream to have my home to be fully decorated in modern victorian decoration. I've been intensely searching and sourcing for related furniture. I've personally went down to check out the items for some shops.

Classical

Recaptured
Enterprise One, 1 Kaki Bukit Road 1
#01-07/08
6749-1003

It has quite a range of colours. Red, baby blue, white, silver, gold and black.
The furniture looks pretty sturdy. And designs are quite unique too. I was told the pieces are imported from France. And the dresser that i set my sight on has a unique identification number. How cool is that? But of course the price tag is huge too.

Mahanttan home collection
116 Lavender Street
#01-02 Pek Chuan Building
Singapore 6836 3738
www.manhanttancollection.com.sg

Per sales personnel, the furniture is made of solid mahogany wood. The seats are quite hard. Designs are classical and finishing pretty standard.

The Cottage Crafts
37 Ann siang Road

http://www.thecottagecraft.com/index.html

I love the ribbon distress linen holstered chair. Its the most comfortable seat i've tried. The items here are more expensive than any other places. There is a very extensive variety of furnishings that are very classical. Swoon~

But its freaking expensive!!! The furniture is made of mid range mahogany wood.

Roomyroom

51 Ubi Ave 1 Unit #01-10 Paya Ubi Industrial Park
6466-8968
http://www.roomyroom.com/html/home.html
http://wholesaleclassicfurniture.com/html/about_us_classic_french_furnit.html

Items here are mostly white wood work. But the touch up is quite bad! It appears that the furniture has been given a very thick coat of paint. But this place sells classical furniture very cheaply. The cheapest i've seen. It has a very extensive range of other furniture in this warehouse and those other furniture is wood. And its really nice. I think its nicer than the classical furniture.

Zest Living
1 Lock Road

http://www.ka-international.com.sg/

The furniture is very similar to the ones that cottage craft. But they are not solid wood. So i walk out without turning back.

King & King Wong
23 Serangoon Central #04-13/14 and #04-73/74/75
Singapore 556083

www.kingnkingwong.com

This is the new kid on the block. And its starting its business in November.
The pro is the furniture are finally installed with modern rollers for drawers. Finally i found the only one furniture that is made this way but still very true the classical design

Lucano

This is a little vintage with a modern twist.

The country style

HuaRong Arts & Crafts Pte Ltd / HuaFu Furniture & Homewares
315 Outram Road, #01-09, Tan Boon Liat Building, Singapore 169074
www.huafufurniture.com.sg

The items here are mainly the rose series. There are few classical pieces.
And they also have baby blue, cream and white. Discounts are marked off listed price while i was there. All furniture is made from elm wood.

Creations from the heart
Anchor point basement
They don't seem to sell any furniture. Focus seem to be on kitchen furnishings.

How can it be?

I just bought a new ink authentic HP cartridge. It printed 10 pieces of 3R pictures. And the ink quality declined drastically. How can it be? According to the website it should print at least 300 pages. Ok i'm doing intensive printing for pictures but it should give me more than 50 pages at the least before giving up at least? Grrrrl.

The shop that sold me ask me to go to HP solution centre at Alexandra Road. I've have to queue to exchange just one cartridge? Are you kidding me??? Frustrated.

Will you be my bridesmaid?

"photos are from weddingchicks.com"

This is albeit of a corny way to ask your friends for help. But i think its quite a cute idea. But of course, i never did this.

I did the traditional way.
Asking them.

The bridemaids are very important to my wedding. Girls i'm counting on you! Much love and thanks in advance.

For the bridesmaids

Tokyo Fashion. Online Shopping so so fun.

Anyway, recently there is a sale at Tokyo fashion. What's different this time is they provide direct shipping to Singapore if you purchase more than 15 pcs.

Its a super good time to rope in all your girl friends and make a purchase.

I bought my bridemaids dresses at this spree. My sis and i combined and purchase 23 pieces of clothes at one shot. Eagerly waiting for the loots to arrive.

I love online shopping. Its easy, fuss free and cheap. Quality is better than those purchases from Lion City. Price is extremely affordable.
