Food Roundup in Osaka: 9 Must-Try Spots from Sushi to Cheesecake

Osaka is a city that knows how to eat — from sizzling street food to refined seafood, cozy coffee shops to indulgent desserts. During our recent trip, we explored a variety of local favorites and hidden gems. Here’s a roundup of 9 food spots in Osaka that left an impression — some unforgettable, some overhyped, but all worth talking about.

🔥 1. Bottle Bird Yakitori (Umeda)

A lively yakitori joint tucked in Umeda, Bottle Bird serves up perfectly grilled skewers with bold flavors and a casual vibe. The chicken thigh and tsukune (meatball) were standouts, and the smoky aroma alone is worth the visit. Great for late-night bites and drinks.

📍 Location: Umeda 💡 Vibe: Izakaya-style, energetic ⭐ Try: Chicken thigh, tsukune, grilled veggies

🍳 2. Tamagoya

This spot celebrates the beauty of the Japanese egg, and the highlight here is the classic Tamago Kake Gohan — raw egg over hot rice. At Tamagoya, the eggs are incredibly fresh, making it safe and delicious to enjoy them raw.

📍 Location: Himeji💡 Vibe: casual diner ⭐ Try: tamago kake gohan (raw egg over rice)

🍰 3. Rikuro Ojisan Cheesecake (Namba)

This jiggly, fluffy cheesecake is an Osaka icon. Light, airy, and not too sweet, Rikuro’s cheesecake is baked fresh and served warm. It’s more of a snack than a rich dessert — and watching it come out of the oven is half the fun.

📍 Location: Namba 💡 Vibe: Takeaway bakery ⭐ Try: Original cheesecake (with raisins!)

🥘 4. Ajinoya Hoten (Namba)

For classic Osaka-style okonomiyaki, Ajinoya Hoten delivers. The savory pancake is loaded with cabbage, pork, and seafood, topped with sweet sauce and mayo. Expect a wait — it’s popular — but the flavors are worth it.

📍 Location: Namba 💡 Vibe: Casual diner ⭐ Try: Mixed okonomiyaki with pork and squid

🥩 5. Steakhouse Kozai (Shinsaibashi)

A hidden gem for steak lovers. Kozai offers premium cuts grilled to perfection in an intimate setting. The wagyu was buttery and rich, and the service was warm and personal. A great splurge meal in Osaka.

📍 Location: Shinsaibashi 💡 Vibe: Upscale, cozy ⭐ Try: Wagyu sirloin, garlic rice

🍣 6. Maruyoshi Sushi (Kizu Market)

Fresh, fast, and full of flavor. Maruyoshi is a small sushi shop near Kizu Market serving top-quality seafood at great prices. We tried otoro, chutoro, maguro, and more — all incredibly fresh. A must for sushi lovers.

📍 Location: Kizu Wholesale Market 💡 Vibe: Counter-style, casual ⭐ Try: Tuna trio, uni, hotate, ika sushi 💸 Note: Cash only

🐟 7. Ginpei Shinsaibashi

Elegant and traditional, Ginpei offers a refined seafood experience with dishes like Tai Meshi (sea bream rice) and seasonal sashimi. The menu is in kanji, but we had help from a local — and every dish was beautifully presented and delicious.

📍 Location: Shinsaibashi 💡 Vibe: Traditional Japanese dining ⭐ Try: Tai Meshi, sashimi platter, cucumber with natto 💸 Note: Credit cards accepted

☕ 8. LiLo Coffee Roasters (Amerika-Mura)

A cozy specialty coffee shop with a cult following. We tried the espresso blend — chocolaty, nutty, with hints of blueberry. The space is tight and often crowded, but the coffee is smooth and satisfying. Each cup comes with tasting notes and the barista’s name.

📍 Location: Amerika-Mura 💡 Vibe: Hip, compact ⭐ Try: Espresso blend, pour-over 💸 Note: Cash only

🥐 9. Grenier Umeda Store

Known for its mille-feuille pastries, Grenier is wildly popular — but for us, it felt overhyped. We tried the seasonal Mont Blanc Halloween edition and the Japanese chestnut mille-feuille. While the filling was just right, the lack of seating made the experience less enjoyable.

📍 Location: Hankyu Grand Building, Umeda 💡 Vibe: Takeaway only ⭐ Try: Brûlée mille-feuille, seasonal specials 💬 Verdict: Beautiful pastries, but not the best overall experience

Osaka’s food scene is diverse, delicious, and full of surprises. From street snacks to refined dining, there’s something for every palate. Whether you’re planning a food crawl or just want a few highlights, this roundup covers the flavors that defined our trip — the good, the great, and the ones we’d skip next time.

Panasonic steam oven NU-SC100WYPQ "Cutie" Product Review

I wanted to get weeks about it  I purchased this item from Tangs at SGD $399. They are having a promotion of discount SGD $50 if you spend SGD $500. So i top up with a vacuum tumbler and pyrex glass dish. After several months of using, here are my comments on this cutie steam oven. This is purely a steam oven with no microwave function. One of the rare oven with no microwave function.  I am ok with it as i steam fishes regularly and its a perfect addition of appliance. The other alternative is the miele steam oven and it is on offer at the same time for SGD $1600. The oven can be plugged to main power point as it is at 13 amp.  Summary: Here are some of my observations using the steam oven.  Buns Easy peasy for the early morning rush to work, put the char siew bao into the oven. Set it to 10 mins and you can steaming hot bun to eat for breakfast. Fish I steam fish majority of the time. It is super easy to use for steaming fish Vegetables Tr...

Kose Beauty Centre Facial Review (Isetan Scotts)

I was very very taken aback when i entered the unassuming beauty salon right in the heart of orchard. While the place is clean and design is simple, it was very sparsely furnished considering its brand name and in comparision with Yamano (the other japanese salon i went).  I entered the facial premises after i passed through the hair salon. What greeted me makes my jaw dropped even more, the room is bare. There is no wall partitions for privacy, in its place are curtains hung to separate the different beds. And i am able to see all the facial therapist and guests. Each therapist handles 2 guests both at the same time!!! From My session suppose to start at 3 pm since my therapist is also handling another customer, i whipped out my phone and start playing candy crush till my therapist is available at 3.30pm. The therapist started by cleaning my face and recommending the appropriate therapy for my skin. I was advised to do the  Whitening & Anti-ageing Treatment an...

Banquet -Parkroyal beach road (Wedding dinner review)

I attended a wedding in October 2013 at the Parkroyal beach road. Boy! I was in for a surprise. The hotel is newly renovated and refurbished to a very corporate and clean polished look. There is a huge area for reception. Even the exterior area is also revamped (i didn't manage to get pictures for outdoors). You can hold your ROM outdoors and have decorated to an outdoor garden setting. Yes the outdoor area is that huge! This place has changed so dramatically.  By comparison, a banquet held at the same location in 2010, see review here . There is alot more room since the wedding i attended is no longer at the other ballroom. The ceilings of the ballroom are tall, creating an illusion of space and comfort.See the ballroom with the backdrop. The photo below is where the bride and the groom walks down the aisle from the back. You are guaranteed a long long walk down the aisle. Romantic backdrop for the stage in romantic flowers display. Interestingly the cham...
